I’m texting with yet another friend today who doesn’t know what to do with their life.
What am I to do with my life? How I am supposed to know what’s right? -Britney Spears
We’re mid-30’s and fighting against every situation. My college friend got a second education and switched careers, finally landed that sweet job at a big company with benefits and vacation… and wants to leave to travel the world.
My best friend since first grade hates her office job so passionately, she asked for things from every country to make her desk happier. She doesn’t know what to do with her life and is sure half of her family will have heart attacks if she dares say that out loud.
I don’t know what to do with my life. Should I give it up and make a new start? – Buzzcocks
And here I am, fresh off the wordly adventure they seek and still stuck! It wasn’t doable, for me, as a real lifestyle (this time, in that place, under those conditions) so I have to start over. But what does that mean? What is my plan?! Ack!
Travel planning
Ok I actually did come up with a little bit of a plan, for now. I told Dr. Brother I would help with my sweet nerd nephews this summer in Montana. Room and board in exchange for running them around to summer camps and keeping them entertained in between. Check. Can do.
But June is five months away and I have to go-go now. My feet are itching to go-go and I have a new backpack.
Travel Research
I could teach in South America for a semester. Flights are really expensive right now, dang, and I don’t feel motivated to go alone.
So I asked around – several of my friends have been on touring shows all across America. What were your favorite weird random cities? And I researched, what are the top backpacking cities in America? Where are digital nomads flocking?
Skipping California cities because they’re more accessible and I’m more familiar with most of them, (separate post later on Cali!) I came up with this list of cities I’d like to explore or revisit :
- Austin, Texas – never been, I heart cowboys and the digital nomads love it
- New Orleans, Louisiana – to Mardi Gras or after, that is the question
- Fort Myers, Florida – maybe Venice, too and other Forts like Lauderdale, based on gypsy recs
- Nashville, Tennessee – I have a friend there with my favorite little dog so why not? Rock n roll and all.
- Richmond, Virginia – I have a couple buddies there who love it and it’s close to…
- Washington, DC – due for another visit, love this city! Barely even scratched the Smithsonian list last time, may skip because it’s very expensive
- Chicago, Illinois – never been, my grandma grew up here and several people have said I’d love it – after the winter
- Kansas City, Missouri – my favorite guys in NYC were from there, they were cool so maybe there’s other cool people there
- Denver, Colorado – also a post-winter destination, I’ve enjoyed other cities in Colorado
- Portland, Oregon – as a 15-year-old traveling with a punk band from Boise, I loved it! But that was 20 years ago…
- Honorary 11th – Mexico. I love tacos
Okay, so that’s where I want to go. Cool. Now to figure out the how…
